Chicago police: Robbers threaten woman with golf club before stealing purse in Lincoln Park

Aug 21, 2023

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two men threatened a woman with a golf club before stealing her purse in Lincoln Park Tuesday night, Chicago police said.

The robbery occurred at about 11:49 p.m. in the 500-block of West Wrightwood Avenue.

The victim was standing on the sidewalk when police said two male suspects approached and demanded her property.

"After she passed the alley right there, there are big trees," said witness Alex Garibay. "The guys were hiding behind those trees. She started screaming, he turned that way. Tried to hit her with a golf thing right there."

One of the suspects was holding a golf club and threatened the victim with it while the other suspect stole her purse, police said. The suspects then fled in a white vehicle.

The victim was not injured, police said.

The attack is the at least the third in recent weeks where golf clubs have been used as weapons. Erik Jensen is one of two men who, on August 18, were assaulted in separate incidents while walking their dogs in River West.

"I got about halfway across the street and all of a sudden I could hear this car coming at me very quickly," he said. "I could see this guy in a black hoodie and a golf club and a baseball stance aiming at my head."

All he had time to do was duck.

"I don't know if they swung at me or if they pulled their swing, but the guy said to me 'Why did you duck' as he drove by," Jensen said.

Because he was not hurt, Jensen did not file a police report until a couple days later when he saw an ABC7 story about the violent assault on Nick Christen, the very same night. He'd previously met Christen in the neighborhood while walking their dogs.

No arrests have been made in any of these cases and police will not say if they're related. Police only said that if and when a pattern is established, they will release that information to the public.
