City schools OK Blizzard Bags, 3

Aug 28, 2023

DELPHOS — Students at Delphos City Schools will have three Blizzard Bag days in addition to the five calamity days this year approved by the school board Monday.

Superintendent Jeff Hobbs told the board the Blizzard Bag days would not be utilized until the five calamity days were used.

“Blizzard Bags are nothing new,” Hobbs said. “Schools have been working on remote learning for at least 10 years.”

Last year, the district could use four Blizzard Bag days before missed time had to be made up.

Hobbs also told the board while the district does have a 3-hour delay policy, that option would also not be used until the school had reached calamity day six.

Four district teachers will attend a WOW (Working on the Work) Team workshop sponsored by the Mercer County Educational Service Center. STEM teacher Jessica Spencer, science teacher Matt Spencer, computer teacher Elizabeth Beaubien and fourth-grade teacher Christy Grothaus were chosen to work with colleagues from the area. Each teacher’s classroom will receive funds through the ESC, which will also cover the cost of substitute teachers for the educators while they attend the workshop.

As of Monday, more than three fourths of this year’s eighth-grade class is preparing for a trip to Washington, D.C., May 7-10. Jefferson Middle School Principal Tony Langhals said the cost of the trip is $700-$800 per student and VFW Post 3035 has pledged $3,500 for the trip.

“Kids are also selling laundry detergent and raffle tickets as fundraisers for the trip,” Langhals added. Contact the school to participate in the fundraisers or to donate.
